How to Security Wipe Your BlackBerry 6 Smartphone

1.Begin the BlackBerry security wipe process by opening up the main BlackBerry Options menu--the icon looks like a wrench

2. Next, scroll down to and select the Security option on the following screen, then choose the Security Wipe listing on the next page.

3.The Security Wipe screen displays a number of options and associated checkboxes that let you specific whether you want to delete E-Mail, Contacts, etc. Make sure you only check “Emails, Contacts, etc.”

4.Finally, to initiate the process, type in the word "BlackBerry" in the confirmation field on the Security Wipe screen, accept any final confirmation pop-ups you may see, and voila, your BlackBerry device is on its way to its factory state. It may take up to an hour to completely wipe your device, depending on how many messages and other data you have stored on-device.


For BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry 6.0 to 7.1

  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options > Security > Security Wipe.
  2. Select the appropriate check boxes to remove data and applications as intended.
  3. Type blackberry, and click Wipe Data.

For BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 5.0

  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options > Security Options >Security Wipe.
  2. Select the appropriate check boxes to remove data and applications as intended.
  3. Type blackberry, and click Wipe.

For BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.2 to 4.7

  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options > Security Options >General Settings.
  2. Press the Menu key, and select the Wipe Handheld option.
  3. Select the Include third-party applications check box to remove third-party applications. Clear the check box to preserve third-party applications.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Type blackberry, and press the Enter key.

For BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 4.1 to 4.2.1

  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options > Security Options >General Settings.
  2. Display the menu and select the Wipe Handheld option.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. Type blackberry, and then press the Enter key.

For BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 4.0

  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options. The Device Options screen is displayed.
  2. Click Security. The Security screen is displayed.
  3. Click the track wheel, and select the Wipe Handheld option.

For BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 2.7

  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options. The Device Options screen is displayed.
  2. Click Security. The Security screen is displayed.
  3. Click the track wheel, and select the Wipe Handheld option.

For BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 2.6

Note: If a password is already set, go to step 5.
  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options. The Device Options screen is displayed.
  2. Click Security. The Security screen is displayed.
  3. In the Password field, press the Space key to enable the password. A dialog box will prompt for a password with at least four characters.
  4. Type a password. Click the track wheel. Enter the password again.
  5. On the Home screen, click the Lock icon. The Lock screen is displayed.
  6. Type the password incorrectly 10 times to trigger a security wipe.

Protect a stolen BlackBerry device

  1. In the BlackBerry® Administration Service, on the BlackBerry solution management menu, expand User.
  2. Click Manage users.
  3. 3. Search for a user account.
  4. 4. In the search results, click the PIN for the user account.
  5. n the Activation list, click Delete all device data and disable device.
  6. Click Yes - Delete all device data and disable device.

After you finish:
  • Verify that the BlackBerry device received the command.
  • Contact your organization's wireless service provider to turn off the service for a BlackBerry device after you send the IT
administration command to delete all of the BlackBerry device data and deactivate the BlackBerry device.


Protect a lost BlackBerry device

If a user misplaces a BlackBerry® device or if a BlackBerry device is stolen, you can protect the data on the BlackBerry device by
locking the BlackBerry device or making it unavailable.
  1. In the BlackBerry® Administration Service, on the BlackBerry solution management menu, expand User.
  2. Click Manage users.
  3. Search for a user account.
  4. In the search results, click the PIN for the user account.
  5. In the Activation section, click Specify new device password and lock device.
  6. Type and verify an activation password. The password must not contain special characters. Some BlackBerrydevices do not support special characters and do not unlock when a user types a password that contain special characters.
  7. Click Specify new device password and lock device.
